I want to start by thanking everyone who contributed to the 90s prompt. It is by far my favorite decade for music and you all did an amazing job at giving it credit. So many artists and songs are still influential now that it’s hard to narrow the prompt down to just two weeks.
So in true chaotic style, I’m giving you another go into the 90s.. .but the caveat being the genre of R&B (Rhythm and Blues). R&B has been around since the 1940s, more notably in that era for the jazz and blues styles. Like many of us, it has gone through many transformations since then, but the 90s is when R&B came of age and really began to shine. 90s R&B songs still sound fresh, catchy, and get people moving. R&B and Hip Hop artists now still emulate the style of artists from the 90s. Why?
Well let me give you a few reasons: Montell Jordan, Missy Elliott, Timbaland, Zhane, Toni Braxton, Erykah Badu, Boyz II Men, Usher, Mary J Blige, En Vogue, Tony! Toni! Tone!, Janet Jackson, Brandy, Aaliyah…
I could go on and on, but if you haven’t heard of at least one of the artists listed above then please look them up. Listen to a song or two and you will see why the 90s was the golden age of R&B.
Which R&B musician(s) or song(s) have influenced you/your life? This genre speaks to the soul, so I would like to know how it speaks to you?
The prompt is not limited to the 90s, it’s merely a jumping off point. There are many more artists that have made a name for themselves in this genre going into the 2000s. So please feel free to write about any R&B musician that speaks to you.
